You are beautiful!
You, right now in this moment, are beautiful.
People may have told you otherwise, but you are beautiful.
You may not think that you are, but you are beautiful.
You may not believe that you are, but you are beautiful.
You are beautiful!
So this is me:
I am beautiful!
You might think in this moment, that in some crazy and egotistical way, that I believe myself to be “perfect”. That could not be farther from the truth. Let me tell you about my imperfections, those things about myself that drive even me crazy; the ones that tell me how ugly and un-beautiful that I am.
I have a jelly belly and you can not see it here but it’s covered with faded stretch marks from carrying my two greatest blessings. My waist and my thighs are much wider around than I wish they were. I have chubby calves. I tell you, they are certainly not made for fashionable boots of any significant height. My hair is pretty flat most of the time. You know that beautiful bounce and curl that models on TV have, not this girl, I get more bounce from my hips than from my hair.
I’ve had glasses since I was eight, and they are pretty thick even with all the fancy advances in lenses. Let’s just say that without my glasses, I can’t clearly see anything unless it’s about three inches from my face. Overall there is really nothing about my appearance that is not absolutely plain. Certainly, I am light years away from “perfect”.
That is just on the outside. I will not even begin the rant about my internal faults because I could fill pages.
You see “perfect” and beautiful are two very different things. Yet, it has been my experience that the two are often interchanged in their every day usage.
Webster.com defines the word perfect to mean “having no mistakes or flaws”. The word beautiful is defined as “having qualities of beauty”.
So what does beauty mean? “The quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit ”
No where in the definition of beauty does it say anything about being perfect.
Perhaps we can take a collective sigh of relief in this moment to know that we do not have to be perfect or without flaw to be beautiful.
I have been pondering this word beauty for a while now. I am increasingly amazing at how wide the definition really is. A quality or combination of qualities that brings pleasure to the senses or to the spirit. So anything, anyone, who brings enjoyment, happiness, delight, joy, bliss, contentment, satisfaction or gratification is a thing or person of beauty.
You, my dear reader, are beautiful!
I know this because you bring me great joy in knowing that I can share my writings with you. When you like my posts or even better when you comment on them or share them, I find great gratification and happiness. By definition that would give you qualities of beauty and mean that YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!
Now, I have got something truly amazing to share with you. It is absolutely incredible.
In the Bible there is a book called Zephaniah. For years I owned a Bible and never even knew this book existed. It is towards the end of the Old Testament. For the longest time I steered clear of most of the Old Testament, giving preference to the New Testament. I assumed it was easier to understand. Here’s the great thing about God, He’s ever so patient and constantly divulging good things. We just need to listen. God can take what we do not know and just transform our lives with His revelation.
Here’s a verse that transformed my life and continues to do so years later:
“For the Lord your God is living among you.
He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:17 NLT
Take Away Truths:
- God lives among us
- God is a mighty Savior
- God delights in us
- God is glad because of us
- God’s love will calm ALL of our fears
- God rejoices over us with song
Wow! That’s a lot out of one little verse. Here is what is really relevant to my message today. You make God glad. He delights in you. God takes so much joy in you that He rejoices over you with song. You put a song in God’s heart!
So that would mean you have qualities that bring pleasure to God. You have beauty. By definition that means
You are beautiful!
Is that incredible or what?! God, who is master designer and creator, believes you are beautiful. I can certainly sit here and tell you all day long, but you may or may not believe me at all. I’m a messy person who makes so many mistakes. Now God believing you are beautiful, well, that is a complete truth that you can rely on at all times.
You are beautiful, not for being perfect, but just for being you.
What is really awesome is that by God’s design, what makes you beautiful is going to be a totally different combination of qualities than that which makes me beautiful.
What are some of the qualities about you that bring enjoyment, happiness, delight,
joy, bliss, contentment, satisfaction or gratification to this world?
For me it is writing cards, notes or messages of encouragement. I love listening to peoples’ stories and doing what I can to refresh them in a way that will help them continue their journey. I know that my prayers for people impact lives in an incredible way. I like organization and order, keeping track of things, that can be helpful in a lot of ways.
These things, they make me beautiful.
What about you, what makes you beautiful?
Take a moment and ponder that, jot it down,
put it on a sticky note on your desk or fridge or mirror.
Why write it down?
So we can hold on to the truths when we need them the most. I guarantee that for all of us, there will be a time when we will have thoughts about needing to be “perfect” to be beautiful. In that moment we will need reminders that “perfection” is not beauty.
We may not be “perfect” but we certainly are beautiful!
Dear, Beloved, and Treasured Lord,
May we just be still in this moment and be in awe of the fact that You, God of miracles, believes that we are beautiful. If You, who are all knowing and ever present, say we are beautiful, if You delight in us and if You are so glad that You are singing over us, may we take heart and not doubt ourselves.
Help us to take captive those thoughts that we need to be “perfect” to be beautiful. Reveal to us daily, moment by moment if needed, what it is about us and how we were made that makes us beautiful. Help us to discover, refine and develop those qualities that You have given us so we can brilliantly and vibrantly shine our lights, our beauty, onto this world. You designed us for a purpose in this time and this place to be who we are, to be beautiful.
Thank You so much Lord for the beauty of every reader who shares my journey with me. They are an incredible blessing to me, in ways that I can not express fully with my meager words.
In the beautiful name of Jesus, amen.
